Well, as the current owner of a Ford SVT Contour, I have to say that I was actually quite pleased to hear that the X-Type that I will be ordering next week is based on the Contour/Mondeo platform. I have had my SVT Contour for four years and 71000 miles, and it has not one single squeak or rattle and the engine still screams (my SVT will outperform the X-Type from a speed standpoint). I never had a mechanical problem with the Contour and it handles as good as or better than some cars costing twice as much. The driving dynamics of the SVT Contour are second to no car in its class, or even the next class above it. The chassis and engine block that the Contour and X-Type share are solid pieces to base a good car on. Basically, I'm moving up to the Jag because I like the styling, the interior, the beautiful paint and the fact that they don't sell Contours in America anymore. The Contour was one of the best automotive secrets in North America and it was sad to see it be discontinued because average Americans like to drive big slothy ugly cars and SUVs. The Contour's design was too progressive and European for the majority of Americans' taste.

So, if Ford/Jaguar want to base my X-Type on the most basic elements of the Contour, I say go ahead! It should be great. My test drive of an X-Type 2.5 Sport proved this to me. It picks up where my Contour left off in handling, although my SVT still leads the X-Type 2.5 in accelleration at all speeds.
