I also had an E39 ('97 528i) which was my 7th BMW. It was a first year model and it was by far, the most troublesome BMW I ever owned. I won't go into details, but I kept that car for less than a year, because I couldn't get the dealer or BMW NA to resolve those problems. That was a while ago and by now, BMW has fixed those problems and the 5 series is a fantastic car. Before looking at the X-Type, I went to the BMW Center to test drive both a 525i and a 530i with a manual transmission. They had neither in stock. I felt it was important to test drive a manual because I had read many negative comments about the CDV valve in the E39 forum. I did drive a 530ia with the sport package and really liked it.

On the way home, I stopped at the Jaguar dealer to look at the X-Type out of curiosity, never thinking I would like it. I was surprised to see there were several 5 speeds on the lot. I drove one and the rest is history. I don't think the X-Type is much smaller than the 5 Series, especially the trunk, even though it feels smaller. That's it for me. I suspect that if the dealer had a 530i or 525i 5 speed in stock that was the color I wanted, that's what I would be driving. I'm grateful they didn't have one now.

Zig, at the risk of escalating the name calling, why do you like it better? You traded in a 5 series - significantly larger with, in my opinion, an interior that was a level or two above the X-type and 3 series. What is it that you like better? Four wheel drive? Smaller, more nimble car? The hood ornament (seriously - I LOVE the hood ornament)?

Since you like your BMW so much and do not like the X-Type I suggest you go back to that forum where you will probably be much happier.
