ACT,

I'm pretty sure the limit is set by the chip and normally for the U.S. market, the limit is set based on the speed rating of the tires installed. Because of the litigation happy customers in the U.S., that top speed rating is pretty conservative. I know the aftermarket chips for BMW's remove the top speed limit. Not sure if the Euro spec chip only differs in the top speed limit. Could be emissions, and lighting control differences also.

I live about an hour or so from the Bonneville salt flats, so I could probably do it without going to jail. The question was really, however, more academic.

I travel to Holland a lot. There, the speed of the 3.0 X-types is ostensibly limited to 155 mph (250 kmh), rather than the 130 mph used in the US. Does anyone know if the speed control is accomplished with a computer chip? If so, do you know if the European chips are interchangeable with the US ones?
Thanks.
ACT,
Try switching from KM to Imperial (Miles) and see if there is any difference of top speed. I lived in Europe and had a 90 Town Car that had a limiter on it tied to teh mph setting. When I used the Imperial, I could only go to 80 mph but when I switched to KM I hit over 145 k (~90mph). I did not push it any further than that.
Rich
