"Whine" from father's X-Type (archive)

Thanx for the info - my father has assigned me the task of trying to discover what the cause of a whining noise in his new X-type - 3.0 sport. It sounds very like the high pitched whine coming from poorly grounded stereo systems, and lasts only a few seconds. I have only heard it once, and didn't have enough time to isolate it. Would anyone have any ideas? Overall, the x-type seems to be rather disappointing. Harsh transmission shifts (his previous car - SC400, second rate interior finishes, evidence everywhere of cost savings....). Thus far, fuel filler door has snapped off, mud flaps as well, and now this whine. The car has only 800 miles on it.
