Darren, when I fill up, I don't hang the cap over the tab. There is a slot in the cap that fits over the tab on the door hinge. Not sure if my explanation is clear. I am able to rest the cap on the hinge so it doesn't hang on the sheetmetal of the car.

On mine (X-Type) the fuel cap is attached by a small plastic lead secured to a point on the inner panel next to the fuel filler opening. There is no way it's long enough to hang over the tab unless the fuel flap is only opened 1/2 way. I can't be the only one having this problem?
