I agree Ford's Money was a big factor...but Jaguar could have used Ford's money to buy switch gear from a quality source...or at least use better materials..

I'm not trying to change your opinion, you're certainly entitled to it. But the fact is, if it weren't for Ford, pouring money into Jaguar and beefing up the quality control, Jaguar wouldn't be around today. Jaguar has stated that the development costs would have been similar if they had started from scratch with the X-Type. Jag wanted an all wheel drive platform to compete with Audi, BMW, Volvo, etc. Reading Jaguar's own press release on the development of the X-Type was very interesting and tells how few parts are shared with the Mondeo (which incidently won the European Car of the Year). There are fewer parts shared between the Mondeo and the X-Type than the S-Type and the Lincoln LS. But the fact is, all new Jaguars are built from Ford parts.

I have no problem with Audi and VW sharing parts, just Like Acura and Honda, Lexus and Toyota, and Infiniti and Nissan. It's OK to share parts if they are good parts to begin with...But not FORD parts. The reason the X-Type is four wheel drive is because the Mondeo is "Front wheel Drive" and it was cheaper for Ford to make the X-Type 4 wheel drive than convert it to rear. GM does it...the Saab 9-5 shares it's chassi with the Opal Omega/Caddillac Catera. The Saab is front drive, the Opal/Caddy is rear. Same chassi, same engine(in the 3.0 V6).
Even my XJR has some Ford parts in her and they cheapen the car. The Ford switch gear for the windows and lock is out of a Taurus, the climate control is out of a Mondeo...
It's like serving hamberger with a fine Merlot...it cheapens the pure heritage of Jaguar...Ford is not and never will be in the same League as Jaguar, or Mercedes, or BMW, or even Lexus...as as long a Ford sullies the Purity of Jaguar...Jaguar wont be in that League anymore. In ever comparison of the More expensive S Type, they comment of the cars "common" Ford underpinnings and "lack" of refinement the Ford pieces bring to the car. I have not read or seen any unbiased reports on the X Type yet except Brit magazines that favor everything British.I do agree with the coment on steering on the early 330's, but BMW came back to there senses and it steers as a BMW should now. I did notice a lot of feedback through the steering column on the S and X Type that even my 14 year old design XJR dosen't do...
I don't deny the X Type as a decent car...it just will neve be what a REAL Jag is or a REAL sports sedan...not as long as it rides on Ford chassis and uses Ford parts...

I have owned 8 BMW's, including a 330Ci that I just traded on my 3.0 X-Type. The X-Type shares only several chassis points with the Mondeo. The engines have been modified. The 3.0 engine is very close to the smoothness of the BMW 3.0 straight 6. Read the reviews and it says the same thing. The shifter has shorter throws than the BMW and the steering has better feel than my 330Ci did. Granted, the BMW cornered flatter, but was no more fun to drive. Do you also have a problem with Audi using VW Golf components for the A4 and A6?

I own several BMW's and a Jag 2000 XJR...
I drove the X Type and the 330i. I am sorry, the X Type might look like a Jag and smell like a Jag, but it's a FORD Mondeo under the skin. (READ FORD CONTOUR) I couldn't get past the FORD switch gear. And the 3.0 Inline six in the Bimmer toasts the FORD/Jag V6 in power delivery and smoothness.
Don't buy if for prestige either because everyone knows its a Ford.
If you like its looks, you're not into sporty cars...then it's fine, but the car just doesn't cut it as a real Jag or a real Sports sedan.
Just my driving Impression....
