The answer to this question will determine whether I consider the X-type or not. There aren't alot of answers to be found on the web, as far as I can tell. However, the fact that the only interior pic that has been released shows a 5-speed is a good sign, especially since all of the exterior shots seem to be of non-EU models (note the amber reflectors in the bumper and the presence of the 'leaper,' which does not meet EU pedestrian crash protection standards).

Jaguar has clearly stated they want this car to compete with the BMW E46 3-series and the new Mercedes C-class. Given that the BMW is available with a stick shift and the Mercedes model with the smaller engine is available with a stick shift, I hope Jaguar will realize that to fully compete in this segment they will need a stick shift.

I think Jaguar is aware of what enthusiasts want, although it is unfortunate the current XK8/XKR are unavailable with a stick shift.

As you point out, the photo of the stick shift is a good sign.

I am also betting that perhaps around the end of '01 to the middle of '02, Jaguar will bring out a high-performance version of the X-Type.
