| Message: | Mac, I could not agree more - my sentiments exactly. Years ago, just after our twin boys were born, my father-in-law lent his Jaguar XJS-R (The TWR version) to me and his daughter, so that we could get away for a few days in Italy. The grandparents took over our Renault Espace in exchange and looked after the kids. It was great fun, but then a whopping 6litre V12 bloody well should be! When we got back, my father-in-law wanted to know what I thought about his "pride and joy," and whether I truly appreciated the performance on tap. I remember saying to him, "It's a fantastically fast car, I was able to pass just about everything on the road............except fuel stations!" Even if I was so rich as to be indifferent to fuel bills (I'm not), I would still be very irked if I had to fill up all the time. My present XK8 coupe returns a very respectable 25 - 28 mpg, and even did a 31 mpg run to Holland and back when I followed a pal in a Ford Mondeo. What you have advocated in this quest for a 500bhp car, is simply motor efficency achieved through optimising the induction and exhaust routes by reducing impedance wherever it shows itself. Polished ports and a blueprinted motor is the way I'd like to go one day, but I guess I'll have to wait a bit. A free-spinning, efficent motor will return both higher speeds and accelerations, AND better fuel efficency. Now that can't be a bad thing, can it? cheers, Andy | ||||
