another thing to check is the fuel regulators. the vacuum side on these regulators can actually rupture causing fuel to be drawn through the vacuum hoses and enter the inlet manifolds causing excessive fuel consumption. this actually happened to my xjs and i had to replace regulator. pull vacuum hoses off and check to see if they have any signs of petrol inside them. i actually used a six cylinder regulator and it works fine. even with this problem my car seemed to run well but was extremely heavy on petrol. my xjs is not a australian delivered car but was a private import so it does not have any emission control system like american cars have. it also is fitted with a high compression v12. i have been led to believe that all xjs delivered to america were low compession v12. the english v12 developed in excess of 300 hp while the american ones did not and were not that good on fuel economy
