| Message: | My advice is to buy it, particularly if you can get the Jaguar warranty. I rolled the dice and lost. I have ~$4K of repair cost into a 1998 XJ8L in 2 years from 35K miles to 65K miles. (~$2500 of routine maintenance as well). 2 weeks ago the idle got rough. My independent mechanic could not figure out the problem. Dealer identified timing chain tensioner failure, and now I am stuck with a $3700 bill. 3 months ago, the car overheated because the water pump impeller (a plastic part) fell into pieces. That set me back $1,000 at an independent shop, mostly due to diagnostics. 4 months ago the car failed to start. First independent mechanic (former Jaguar service manager) told me I needed a new engine ($12K). Second independent mechanic diagnosed a flooding problem and started the car up. Total cost $500. So, I would have been ahead on those 3 issues alone, and now I am wondering what is going to break next. Very disappointing to see these mechanical failures. You really wonder if Jaguar's powertrain engineers have any idea what they are doing. You have to think that the water pump and the timing chain are latent defects. This car has been carefully maintained. | ||||
