| Message: | pjg - My take on your situation would be to have an independent, qualified mechanic spend a couple/few hours looking over the car, doing compression tests, checking for body work, replaced parts, and checking for wear-and-tear beyond the norm (valve cover gaskets come to mind here). If none is found, keep in mind that the warranty extensions, or third-party warranties, by definition, must take in more than they pay out. Although there are exceptions, most people would be better off without purchasing the warranty. This is the route I chose when I purchased my '00 with 46.5k mi. It's now got 70k mi and the maintenance has been only brakes, tires, and the 60k service (knock on slightly-cracked wood). The '00 VDP is an absolutely beautiful car - will you have better peace of mind knowing you'll take care of it and gamble on the lesser liklihood of repairs exceeding the warranty cost, or paying the warranty cost and knowing it's covered in the event of a catastrophe (maybe)? Although I believe it's decreased, extended warranties at one time had phenominal percentage returns for the sellers - this was translated into high commissions for the salesmen, explaining the big sales pitch ... Best of luck - Kent ('00 XJR, 70k mi) | ||||
