the car does exactly as you describe when the ring gets rusty and cracks. the pulses are just a little off from ordinary until it finally breaks more and sets off the ABS light.
you need to remove the rear wheels, and look straight down from the top to see into the area where this ring is. turn the wheel and look carefully for a crack.
