I've not encountered that revving/flaring change.

Some S-Type owners have the revs rising and then snatching into gear at a lower speed. See Variant 2 on my website - there is a Flash animation showing what we have experienced.

I often expereince Variant 2 - but not at 4000-5000rpm, usually at less than 5 mph while gently pulling away and, in my case, more like a learner driver dumping the clutch.
