OK guys you asked for it so I will give you an education about your favorite detailing products. The number one solvent that FK1 uses is n-Butyl Acetate. Why? Because it's dirt cheap. PRICE Historical (1998 - 2003): High, $0.58 per pound, contract, Gulf, tanks, dlvd.; low, $0.38, same basis. Current: $0.53 to $0.59, same basis. Current spot price, $0.29, same basis. USES Lacquer solvent, primarily for wood furniture and automotive topcoats, 86 percent; process and extraction solvents, 11 percent; miscellaneous, including adhesives and sealants, 3 percent. STRENGTH n-Butyl acetate is employed as a solvent for a variety of coating resins including epoxies, urethanes, cellulosics, acrylics and vinyls. The major applications for these surface coatings are wood furniture and fixtures, containers and closures, automotive refinishing and maintenance, and marine coatings. Now, the problems with that product, it is so toxic regardless of what the manufactorer claims that it is part of the USA Superfund toxic cleanup list. It contaminates ground water, so go put a little in a glass and give it to your daughters because pretty soon that stuff is going to be in ground water everywhere because idiot companies like the fact they have a cheap solvent. Also uneducated detilers will buy anything that is cheap and easy to use, w/o realizing what true quality is and thinking about future consequences. http://www.weitzlux.com/nys/newyorksuperfund/lawsuit/envirotek_17350.html http://www.weitzlux.com/pollutant/newyorkny/lawsuit/n-butylacetate_17349.html Now, what we don't know. That solvent is a nutty smell but FK1 has other more prevelant smells, what are they? I don't know and w/o a chemical analysis I couldn't tell you, but it smells like a cheap oil. IE, they say polymer but in realty it is an oil of some type or wax depending on the product flashed dried by the use of a solvent. FK1 reminds me of a host of products that came out in the 60's, but hey it's not the 60's anymore. Since I have been accussed of lashing out I guess I should oblige you folks, now answer me this, am I lying? | ||||
