I won't go into detail on what exactly happened, but does anyone know how to get affordable car insurance in New York City after being dropped by your insurance co.?

It seems that whoever I call quotes ridiculous sums of money just to insure a car that's barely being driven. Obviously, driving without insurance isn't an option, so I need to get this resolved quickly.

What do people who've had serious offenses like DUI, crashes or serious traffic violations do for insurance?
