Re: GEICO deleted my comprehensive coverage (166 views)
Message: I'm assuming that you've posted this to let everyone know that they should OPEN EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF MAIL from their insurer. I mean really, how many seconds of your life would you waste if it were actually junk mail? I make sure to open every piece of mail addressed to me just so I can make sure it isn't something important and also so that I may shred it.

In this case, I would guess that they did send you mail indicating that they needed a photograph of the vehicle. It probably got lost at your last address or was one of the pieces of mail you threw away. They only legally need to send you one. Unfortunately, it is considered your fault if you didn't receive it unless the Post Office reported damaged or undelivered mail.

Also, since the policy was renewed automatically, you still should have received a policy "Statement of Coverage" sheet. ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, make sure to review this page to be absolutely sure that you still have the coverage you assume you have and that the policy hasn't changed in some way. Again, a couple of minutes here can save you a lot of headache in the future. The insurer is legally obligated to provide you with this Statement of Coverage sheet every time the policy is renewed or if a change in your coverage occurs. This most likely would have been in those pieces of mail you ignored.

I dislike putting it this way, but responsibility should be taken on your part. It is not up to the insurance company to check with you and make sure you understand. As an adult, it is your responsibility to make sure everything is in order and if it isn't -- take care of it. If you have questions, just ask. If you don't like what they give you, go somewhere else.

As an FYI, in most states (I thought all of them, but I could be wrong) it is illegal to drive a car that has been financed WITHOUT comprehensive insurance. (This only applies to vehicles financed with an auto loan, not a personal loan.) Usually the financing company will double-check with you to make sure you are covered.

Sorry if this came off as a rant, but it is really up to you to make sure everything is in order. Just keep that in mind.
