| Message: | Muscle Car Era? Being old, I can remember 40 years ago to 1968 when the Muscle Car Era was beginning to peak with 427 cu in/425 hp engines. Then in the early '70's we hit the Oil Embargo and I began paying 59 cents/gallon for gas after 25 cents/gallon in the late '60's. Finally in 1973 if I recall correctly we has the oil shortages and gas rose to $1.00/gallon. Also around that time cars had to meet emission standards and it became too tough to certify the big gas guzzlers so they fell to the wayside, and horsepower dropped drastically. 40 years later we have 400-500+ hp cars running around getting 12 mpg. We are seeing gas shortages now and so gas prices are rising over $4/ gallon and people are trying to dump their SUV's for something smaller. By 2020, fleet gas mileage must be at 35 mpg. As we enter the 2010's, car manufacturers will be miniaturizing cars and using smaller engines to meet the new gas standards. For all we know gas might jump to $7/gallon. While in England a month ago, when I filled up my rental car and did the liters to US gallons conversion, gas cost me $9/gallon. So, I'm beginning to see history repeating itself, and the high powered BMW's, Mercedes, Corvettes, and on and on becoming things of the past as we continue on toward 2020. The good thing I see coming of this is that the 60's muscle cars are very valuable today, and so in 40 years, our M3's might also become very valuable as collector's items. Too bad I won't be around for it in 40 years....unless I make it to 100 years old...he he. Of course none of this will deter me from buying an E92 M3....it's fun being retired. | ||||
