Message: Maybe a muffler shop can just patch in some piping or even just fill the hole?

If they can't save the cat, sell it. You'll be able to get a couple few hundred dollars for the OEM cat.
Mine had holes in the outer cat casing, so I sold the cat and bought a Magnaflow section for about $245 shipped. It's awaiting install, so I can report on fitment or sound yet. Or obviously how long this one will last, but if I get a few years out of it, I'll be happy.
