(in all caps, because I am very happy with the progress that I made with this over the weekend.)

I had the same problem with my vehicle and I figured out the solution.

I have a 2004 X5 4.4 that I removed BMW assist to install bluetooth. When you remove the bluetooth kit, you have to disconnect two (purple-tipped) antenna wires. One of these wires goes to the antenna in the rear bumper and the other wire goes to the connection in the armrest. You simply connect these two wires together, and voila, your armrest is connected to the antenna and you get, oftentimes, 5 bars.
