Message: At least with BMW the oil light comes on early enough for you to avoid any damage.

Think of required oil top ups being a visible sign that the oil is doing its job.

On the CEL, is it the infamous minor leak in the evaporative emission control system?

Anyway, I would just get an inexpensive reader so you can turn the light off yourself, on the assumption that it is not fixable, not important, and just an annoyance.
