2007 X3 - Trans issues (377 views) (597 thread views)
Message: Read an old article regarding transmission gremlins on a 2005 X3 with manual trans. I have a 2007 X3 (Montego Blue/Black - Premium pkg.) and on three occassions the transmission light (in yellow) came on and the car would not shift past first gear and would hesitate really bad. Felt like it went into "limp mode". First time it happened was when the car probably had about 7K miles. The service advisor said to turn the car off and let it sit for a minute or two. Start the car again and it should reset. I was really not happy to hear such an advise but the car was fine after that. I figured it was just a fluke. On the next scheduled visit I had them look into it though and they said that the car needed to get a software update for the transmission as I also complained that the car has the tendency to lurch from stop unless I start off in sport mode (heard about this on Roundel). Guess since this was the first 6-speed automatic there were some issues. Then around 13K miles it happened again and I did the same "procedure" and it was fine again. Now with 19,800 miles, it happened again today and for the third time I repeated the "procedure" and it ran fine again. This time someone almost rear-ended me because I was merging when it suddenly happened. I a bringing the car back to the dealer to be looked into again as I do not want to end up in an accident specially if my wife is driving it. I really hope that it is just another "software" update as my wife and I really love this X3 and right now it has gained a sentimental value to us. I would normally turn it in after the lease is up but we would like to keep this due to sentimental reasons. Not a good way to keep it if it will be a constant concern for us. I know it has the BMW Assist and can call for towing easily but I've owned several BMWs (E30, E34, E36 & E46) and never had to be towed even once. Still have my E36 and E46 and they continue to run flawlessly.

Has anyone experienced the same problem with their '07 X3?

Also, one other question I have. Does anyone know the correct fitment of wheels and tires (staggered or not) if one wants to upgrade to 20's?

Thank you in advance for any advise.

Bob
