| Message: | This past Memorial Monday I was inside the garage a big part of the day but didn't get to do as much as I wanted. Anyway I spent some hours on opening and cleaning the starter. This is after reading email directions from David F and Jesus from Spain. The two key bolts that keep the starter together are the 6-inch long thin bolts that also stick out the forward end of the starter as mounting studs for 10-mm nuts. No magnet inside. The same current flows through the rotor and stator coils (in series or in parallel?). Four huge graphite brushes still have lots of life left. There are also four #4 phillips bolts around the body I loosened them but actually was not necessary unless I want to remove the stator coils. The condition of the planetary gear set is one I have consern about. As seen in the photo, the planet gear plastic housing has developed many cracks. The Sun gear and planet gears are themselves metal and should last. The ring gear is made of plastic and a couple of deep cracks at one location have already separated the ring. I hope there is a replacement of that ring gear but short of that I filled the empty space behind the cracked teeth with JB-weld to see if it can use more support. Also cleaned off the blackened grease and re-applied generous amount of Permatex Dielectric grease on every rubbing surface I can see. Hope by doing that I can use the starter for a few more years. There are three #2 phillips bolts to loosen to open the solenoid (small cylinder) but two were so tight I left that part intact. Thus I could not open the other side of the gear set where the solenoid engages the output gear to the drive plate. I also managed to put the upper pan back with all the bolts and hose attachements. Am beginning to open the tranny A-clutch carefully. ![]() Patrick C 88 750 130K | ||||
