Look closely and see the welder sitting in front of the truck and the arc near or on the gas tank!!! This picture comes from an OSHA site with safety posters.
Now, relating to your question. If I were doing that, I'd jack the car up and put a sturdy jack stand under each jacking point at a reasonable working height. Then I would take off the wheels and set the hubs in the cradle of each floor jack. Then I would jack the hubs up until the car JUST begins to lift off the jack stands, but still touching stands. Then I'd suck down two brews, say a brief prayer and crawl under the car.
