It sure was when, for example, M3 rod bearings were failing regularly; BMW loudly proclaimed it was abuse on the part of the driver, not the sacred car. "Ve haff achieved perfection, herr owner!"
My car was broken in very carefully, is maintained religiously, oil changed every 7,500, oil always warmed up before driven hard, it's never leaked a drop of oil, never over-heated, the climate here is mild, and yet it burns some oil.
Now, I'm not upset about that. I expect oil consumption to some degree. And I realize most people treat their cars badly and that you see the result of that every day. But, for heaven's sake, "can't blame the car"? That's a little scary.
