Message: I said "leaky" was ok in the context of this system. He claims that the cone will return to rest in several seconds. This is a very small leak compared to a hole in the box where leads might come out. If the box is too leaky, the leak itself becomes a tuned resonance that will indeed affect the response and make the bass muddy at some frequencies.
A good leak might make the cone feel like it was moving in wet sand and would help damp the response. If you look up "aperiodic loading" in a speaker context, I'm sure will find more info. It is essentially a controlled leak, typically a hole covered with compressed fiberglass.
